[TOT] Phase I:::001
Present: Darren (sound art); Lim Weiling (set installations); Lim Woan Wen (light installations)
Discussed about possible venues, possible date of installation and fees. Discussed about motivation, concept and overall project initiation.
Presented initial materials conceptualization to collaborators and received feedbacks and ideas:
- Explained plastic bags idea.
- Explained “McDonald’s straws” structure and ball bearings in liquid paper bottles. Raised issues of size of ball bearings versus the circumference of the straws. Weiling mentions the need to test the idea.
- Explained the retrofit switches installation and the possibility of sounds processing and production, possible circuitry for lighting (e.g. random light points in installation space via activations of these retro switches, etc); Weiling suggested the possibility of random genres of retrofit switches as alternative to singular identical retro flick switches – due to difficulty in locating large quantities of identical retro flick switches. Clean, clinical and neat installation VS. random, messy and retro installation.
- Explained ideas on old marbles (gor li); brain-stormed ideas on possibly “stringing” large quantities of marbles to create “floating (overhead) terrains”. Point about interaction with such installations may cause entangling of “strings”… Weiling raised the possibility of using thicker strings or of another material (wire, etc), which may solve the problem [need to try]. Woan Wen speculated the potential of lighting this installation. Darren thinks sound production of this installation is magical. Mentions of old bouncy rubber balls that we used to play with when we were young.
- KIV retro “rooster bowl”.
- Woan Wen mentions old eraser games employing retro “robot pencil cases” and other stationery objects to create “obstacle courses”. Darren thinks it is a charming installation that engages visitors to interact directly however questions the potential of it being a “sound installation”. KIV.
- Explained concept of “Tikam”…
- Woan Wen mentions “bubble wraps”. Darren brings up SoniColumn installation by Jin-Yo Mok; Weiling mentions the possibility of a “bubble wrap music box”. To be further developed on.
- Explained ideas on using “Tamiya Car Motors” with old arcade buttons. Explained basic ideas on circuitry. Suggested the metal hangers to create structures which these motors vibrate, activated by arcade buttons.
SIDE NOTES: Weiling suggested to create installations as “characters”; adding a context to each installation and as a main frame for the overall installation; conversations between objects -> singing -> talking; Story telling. Possibility of “first person” POV; Woan Wen suggested minimal write-up; Contents necessary but minimal.
Possibility of venues further discussed and possible date of installation set on second half of the year of 2009. Possibility of joining Design Festival 2009 raised by Weiling. Discussions on funds sponsorship and raising. Discussed on the possibility of a dedicated site for [TOT] once hitting Phase II; with context and contents; as opposed to using wordpress (here), which are updates that are more logistical, technical and conceptualizations.
Discussed on time lines with regards to everybody’s schedule:
- Present to December 2008 (when Weiling returns from overseas) – PHASE I (001 – nth); conceptualizations, brainstorming, research and development, discussions and (mini) prototype test-outs, develop ideas on context and contents (story telling; “characters”); logistical and administrative (fundings, venues, dates).
- December 2008 onwards – PHASE II (001 – nth); actualizations of ideas and constructions of larger prototypes, actual circuitry constructions with installation construction, QC on installations and concepts, possible set up of website(?); fundings and logistics; regular commitment.
- Production and Installation – PHASE III; actual installation; dates TBA
SIDE NOTES: Need to decide on venue (bookings or sponsored), possible festivals or programmes, endorsements or commissions prior sourcing funds.
