THRESHOLD II
Understanding “silence” and the many facets of possible expressions… we questioned the notion of “silence”, “quietness”, “emptiness”, “nothingness”, which need not necessarily translate into real silences or “inactivity”. The state of “inaction” or “minimal actions” in terms of sounds/movements were challenged today and such expressions we exposited:
Exposition I:
- Experimented with “one note”; repetitions… and the possibility of creating drones (or a single extended tone) ~ sampling (RC-20 & max/msp) + processing (max/msp) ; monotony => death (死亡); “breathless” ; out of breath => (单; 千篇一律) => 空
- Stretching gaps and building through “inactions”; varying the gaps of each repeated note; mandane
- Breaking away from monotony; possible variations through monotony… discourse; disjunction; evolve…
Exposition II:
- Simple wave form (max/msp)… drone: persistent and perpetual unchanging tone (死/空)
- Patterns through passing another carrier wave to modulate the simple wave form to create repetitive patterns: Breaking away from monotony
- Explored dissonance and varying (unpredictable) punctuations on piano; building counters (anti-counters) on top of repetitive form; Note: Possibility of exploring “physical stretch” for chording methods: 反弹
Discussion on “expressions” and “representation”; easy to paint images through sounds but may be too literal. Chin Huat brought up an example in Butoh, which was rather enlightening. Possibility of grasping or/and presenting an “aesthetic” through indirect means and associations. Food for thought and definitely worth exploring: 因虚而实, 因实而虚; real silences may not bring about “silence”… and “fullness” may bring about “silence/emptiness”: negation
STRUCTURE II
Re-explorations: ending… using Khaen to go into final build (RC-20 & max/msp sampling + processing) as explore in last rehearsal.
Using an improvisation to kick off prior going into the final portion: using the piano as a percussive instrument/object (+ RC-20 sampling) resulted in something interesting… definitely keeping it… but resulted in the failure of the final build…
Unsuccessful finale because the improvisation ended up over powering the final build

- electronic build ~ acoustic build = * established because of contrast
