Discussion on the notion of “space” (空间)

• 空间… 空间里的空间… 空间里共存/存在的空间; space… space within a space… space being in a space
• 空间里生长/延伸出来的新空间; space that evolves from a space
• 人体为空间 (有机?); body as a space itself
• 少即是多; less is more

EXPLORATIONS

Exposition #1: Sound of a Space | 空间的声音

• Sound of a space; no real silence… every space has its own characteristics in terms of sounds; evirons
• using a simple concept of feedback resonance to explore the “sound of a space”. Every space has its own unique frequency response, some undulating, some flatter than others; using microphones to pick up feedback frequency responses to explore the sounds unique to a space itself. Processing and manipulating the frequencies to create layers that are born from these primary frequencies – morphing, evolving (变化/演变:1)
• Every new sound introduced becomes important and intricate; obvious and necessary; delicate
• Visualizing sounds as signal waves within a space; taking (meta)physical forms; translation of forms; physical vs. metaphysical (变化/演变:2) – evolve
• “Silence” after the exposition, redefined the original space itself; questioning the environs (变化/演变:3)

Sight: In darkness, we have a “redefinition of space”; extended, endless, claustrophobic, cosmic, etc… our eyes adapt to darkness as we see the space reveals itself to us slowly over time. Any light source becomes physically visible (conscious)…

Exposition #2: Singular Space | 单一的空间

• Mundane, repetitive sounds; spaces/gaps between each sound; unchanging -> change; drone; alienating intrusion
• earning/yearning for change; waiting; extending… attentive
• “forcing” or “inducing” listeners/audience to amplify their perception and consciousness

… being in a (performance) space, is a liminal experience.
