A LOOK INTO DEFINITIONS

:::Liminality:::

Etymology: Latin limen ‘threshold’

Definition:

the condition of being on a threshold or at the beginning of a process; of or relating to a sensory threshold; barely perceptible; of, relating to, or being an intermediate state, phase, or condition : in-between, transitional.

“Turner describes the liminal as a period of transition. . . During the time spent in this condition, a person abandons his or her old identity and dwells in a threshold state of ambiguity, openness and indeterminancy. Only after undergoing this process may one enter into new forms of identity and relationship, and rejoin the everyday life of the culture. . . “

Anthropology:

the transitional period or phase of a rite of passage, during which the participant lacks social status or rank, remains anonymous, shows obedience and humility, and follows prescribed forms of conduct, dress, etc.

“The purpose . . . is to remind us
how difficult it is to remain just one person
for our house is open, there are no keys in the doors,
and invisible guest come in and out at will. “

As a technical computer jargon:

To temporarily render inactive.

At this juncture, I think we are still looking at it from a very basic approach of “definition” but already I think it is very interesting and draws some co-relations in each other as well as in the art forms we do. There is a lot to “choose” from and I think it serves as a basic palette for us to start forming ideas and concepts (or approaches) with relation to our art forms.

On a side note, searching for “QUIESCE” and “阈” as images using google, both came back with results of images of technical/mechanical images (graphs, ideograms, charts, etc)… rather coincidental… Next up, I will be pulling in references of “liminality” with regards to performances (perhaps with space and sound as well)…
